One of the Greatest Movies in Hip-Hop History, 8 Mile

One of the Greatest Movies in Hip-Hop History, 8 Mile

Today, November 8, was a great day for Hip-Hop. A pair of birthdays, a pair of TV shows, and possibly Hip-Hop’s greatest movie comprise today’s edition. Daily $wagg wishes a Happy Birthday to current Co-Founder of Strange Music, Tech N9ne. The Kansas City-bred emcee hits the big four-oh today, with nearly the last fourth of Nina’s years spent giving us Strange Music. Today, we also celebrate Eric B., the DJ from 80’s phenomenom group Eric B. & Rakim’s, 46th day of birth. The group is largely considered one of the most influential rap figures ever, in part thanks to Eric’s spinnin’. Today also marks the final airing of 2 of BET’s premier rap shows, Rap City in ’08 (it aired nearly 20 years) and Beef:The Series in ’06 (it only aired a year). Also, Shaquille O’Neal’s second album, Shaq Fu: Da Return, dropped today. The album landed the likes of Redman, Method Man, RZA, Keith Murray, and Warren G for guest appearances as well as Erick Sermon, The Rza, Redman, Warren G, and Def Jef for production. (Suprisingly) The album went gold and reached #67 on the Billboard 200. Finally, today is the day Eminem’s semi-autobiographical flick, 8 Mile, hit theaters. The movie was a commercial and critical success, as well as winning the Academy Award for Best Original Song for Slim’s smash hit, “Lose Yourself”.
