Ol' Dirty Bastard Around 1999

Today, November 13, marks the day 7 years ago Russell Jones or Ol’ Dirty Bastard was pronounced dead. Only 2 days before his 36th Birthday, the co-founder of the Wu-Tang Clan complained of chest pains, later collapsing in Rza’s recording studio at about 4:35 PM. He was pronounced dead within 30 min at 5:04 PM. An autopsy later found a plastic bag of cocaine (allegedly) and the prescription drug tramadol in Jones stomach. The official cause of death was ruled an accidental drug overdose. Dirt McGirt is one of my personal favorite member of Wu and one of my favorite rappers of all-time as I own hardcopies of both of his solo albums. Dirty will always be remembered as a free spirit and somewhat of a folk hero or urban legend due to his bizarre antics and legal troubles. For example, ODB was once arrested in Virginia Beach, VA for shoplifting a $50 pair of sneakers while carrying nearly $500 on him. ODB also once supposedly called a female prosecutor a “sperm dumpster” in a courtroom as well as asking police to “make the rocks disapear” when once arrested for possession of crack cocaine. ODB has also been shot multiple times, incarcerated multiple times, pulled a 4-year-old girl out of a burning car and visited her in the hospital under an anonymous name, fathered 13 children, spent a month as a fugitive after escaping a court-mandated rehab, went up on stage out of turn at the Grammy’s claiming “Wu-Tang is for the children”, went to pick up his welfare check in a limousine live on MTV, and many many other outrageous antics. Undoubtedly, Ol’ Dirty Bastard provided us with one of the most interesting lives, skillsets, and personalities of anybody who ever picked up a mic. ODB has also had both of his 2 solo albums certified gold, reach the top 10 on the Billboards, and had one nominated for a Grammy. While ODB is gone, I dont think he’ll ever be forgotten.
